Whether you are a serious hiker or just getting into it, the area offers many beautiful trails, including the famous Appalachian Trail and the soon to be famous, Virginia Creeper Trail. Damascus has several specialty shops that handle hiking needs from walking sticks to trail maps.
Six bike rental shops offer a wide variety of bikes and flexible shuttle services. You can choose a shuttle that includes their bike or take your own along.
Horse trails abound as do places to rent horses or to board your own. If your interest is only in looking, not riding, you'll want to see the wild horses in the nearby recreational areas. They're one of our most popular tourist attractions for young and old alike.
Rivers, lakes, and mountain streams offer great bass and trout fishing. Boat rentals are available at a number of these. Experienced fishermen are available as guides to the "best fishing" around.
If you can't get away unless you can get away to a golfing opportunity, there are several 9 hole and 18 hole golf courses in the area. Damascus boasts one of the most beautiful 9 hole courses within ten minutes of The Mountain Laurel Inn.

A few examples are the Cranberry Festival, Apple Festival, story-telling festivals, crafts festivals, Bluegrass festivals, quilting festivals, and the two week long, nationally acclaimed Virginia Highlands Festival. The famous Barter Theatre, The state Theatre of Virginia, is located only 25 minutes away. It offers a wide variety of plays to include superbly performed musicals. The start of lifelong careers for many famous actors such as Patricia Neal and Ernest Borgnine, it has continued to carry on the tradition of talented, highly qualified performers throughout its history.
